His First Visit To His New School

Kyle starts school in just a few days!  He will be starting 6th grade at a brand new school, in a new school district.

New school next year

After two years of attending his current school, Kyle will be attending a new school next year.  Since we moved, it put us in a different zone.

I wanted to get him enrolled into the new school before school ends because it would give me one less thing to worry about.  I tried calling the elementary school closest to us and after being transferred to the Pre-K EC teacher and then having to call back, I asked if we should just come in.  We stopped by and I was able to speak to the head EC teacher and she was able to determine that he would not attend their school.  She gave me the number to her supervisor at the main office/district office.

I called the number from the parking lot since Shannon has a cell phone and we were already out and about for this purpose.  Anyway, she took down Kyle's name and address and looked up what school he will attend.  She said she will email the principal to let him know.  They will set up transportation too.  She gave me his teacher's name and said I could call her about a week after school ends to meet with her if needed.

I feel better that he will be ready to attend his new school.  We even drove by the school.  It is an elementary and middle school on one campus.

I was also informed that they use the same program as his current school.

Dreaming of furniture and an iPhone

Shannon was thinking about getting new furniture for our new place and have it set up before we officially move in.  He wanted to get a coffee table, two end tables and a new TV stand.  Our current TV stand is about 9 years old.

After browsing online for possible places to go to, he found end tables priced at about $250 at JC Penney, which is way out of our budget.  So, he decided we should try Target and Walmart. We found some really cute pieces at Target and then went to Walmart to look around.  One our way home, Shannon realized that we are unable to afford new furniture, even if it's the kind you assemble yourself.  He decided that we should use the money towards a washer and dryer.  We're still not sure if we are going to buy or rent.  I have a feeling we should buy them.

I have been looking/wanting/dreaming of getting an iPhone!  They are pricey but I have it narrowed down to getting one through Straight Talk or Cricket.  I know I don't need a phone now but it would be nice to have.  I like the iPhone 5 because it comes with Siri and a few other perks.  I am trying to save up the money I earn from my blog to actually purchase the phone.  I am making a semi-steady income with my blog that I may be able to afford a cell phone each month.

Toys R Us

We just got back from Toys R Us!  Shannon wanted to spoil Kyle for Christmas since this is the first Christmas we have been able to get him any presents!  Shannon and I ended up getting over $128 worth of toys for Kyle!  We bought him Spiderman toys, a boat and many other things.

We also stopped at Cricket because Shannon needed a case for his phone.

Now that we have new toys, I am going to go through his current toy box and get rid of most of the toys!  When we moved here, I wanted to get rid of most of his toys then but Shannon wanted to keep them.  While Kyle is in school, I will be going through his toys and getting rid of them so he won't see me throw them away.

Started working

Earlier this week, Shannon received a call from his new employer [the contract security company] asking if he's available to work this weekend.  It is good to finally have some hours.  He also works next Saturday.  He is going to let them know that he can also work in Greensboro/Triad area, instead of just Winston Salem.  They said that the people in Greensboro need help because some of them are getting upwards of 60+ hours a week.  He's going to let them know that he's available full time, and hopefully that will lead to more hours.

This weekend, we found out that he did not get the job at the college.  In a way, I am glad because it is a graveyard position and I honestly didn't see him doing the hours or the job itself.  It would really limit us as a family because I prefer all of us to be on the same sleep schedule.

We've been talking about Shannon having a cell phone.  We have to wait until he gets more hours at work before we can actually buy one.  It would be good for him to have one, especially since his employer will call with shifts that are available.  He would also need a cell phone to carry at work.

Received my iPad

I received my iPad yesterday and couldn't wait to open it up and start playing with it.  I only played with it for less than 2 hours.  Honestly, it's a nice product but I'm glad we didn't purchase this with our own money.  My husband and I are unemployed and have been for over 2 years.  An iPad is not what is necessary for us to survive right now.

We are not privy to the cell phones of today with internet, camera phones and Siri -- which is fascinating.  Our cell phone is basic, it makes and receives calls and does basic text messaging.  We use it for emergencies only.

The iPad is perfect for a business person or someone who works and is on the go.  The iPad is also great for "on the go."  I didn't like having to type on the keyboard with my two pointer fingers!  Also, the iPad is nice for those who have only ONE email address, which I do not.  I have several accounts for different reasons.

Although, since we love to travel, the iPad is great to bring on the road.  I hope that when we're on the road and we need to use the internet, we can stop at a place with free wi-fi to look up what we need.

Cell Phone

Yesterday I finally signed up for a free cell phone from SafeLink. They offer cell phones for free to low income families who receive food stamps, medicaid, etc. They also provide free minutes each month. I checked the status of my application and it has been approved. My cell phone will be sent out to me within 5 to 10 days.

Meanwhile, Shannon and I may still get another cell phone. If they offer Cricket out here (or something similar), we'll go through them.

I admit, I am not familiar and up-to-date with all the latest cell phones. I don't even know the difference between and iPhone or a blackberry or what features they offer. I honestly don't care! I don't understand how people will stand in line just for a phone. Shannon and I haven't really had a cell phone since the flip phones came out. I wouldn't even know how to take a picture with a cell phone. Yesterday, a fellow new hire offered to let me use her cell phone to call Shannon. She handed it to me and said, "You have to open it to turn it on." Of course, not knowing what the heck to do, I kind of fumbled with it and tried flipping it open thinking it may be a flip phone. Finally I handed it back to her saying I have no idea how to do that! LOL The type of phone she had opened up like the one below. Although it didn't have the keyboard, and the keypad was on the front of the phone.
